United Utilities employee, Chris is currently on a two year First Call Operative (FCO) Gas Apprenticeship with Develop. The programme incorporates 2 week blocks of classroom based theory/practical exercise and assessment, followed by 4 weeks of hands on work experience.

Throughout the Apprenticeship Chris receives regular reviews, every 12 weeks. This allows both Develop and United Utilities to monitor his progress throughout the programme, identify any problems early on and set actions for the future.
Chris was particularly motivated to become an apprentice by the 'get paid to learn' incentive. He also believes that his chosen vocation will provide a 'job for life'.
When Chris finishes his Apprenticeship he plans to work as a First Call Operative for United Utilities.
A Typical Gas First Call Operative Apprenticeship includes:
- 3 Key Skills at Level 2 including Communication, Application of Number and Information Communication Technology
- Level 3 NVQ in Gas Emergency Service Operations (City and Guilds)
- Level 3 Technical Certificate in Gas Emergency Operations (City and Guilds)
- NRSWA Unit 1 Underground Avoidance of Apparatus (City and Guilds)
- NRSWA Unit 2 Signing, Lighting and Guarding (City and Guilds)
