City and Guilds Excavation Support Techniques (No Live Dig) training course

A 4 day training course for persons involved in excavation works, which are carried out in unstable ground to a depth of approximately 2.5 metres, for the purpose of laying, repairing and modifying utilities. Course includes excavation in a pre-cast trench.

  • How to lower pipes into excavations.
  • The use of proprietary shoring systems.
  • The withdrawal of steel sheets and timber and backfilling excavations.
  • Emergency procedures in the event of excavation accidents.
  • Safe working procedures in excavations.

What qualifications will you achieve?

  • This course incorporates assessment and certification under the City and Guilds Frontline Skills Framework Utilities 5831 scheme unit 343 Trench Support Timber, 344 Trench Support Steel, 345 Trench Support Hydraulic, 970 Trench Support Plastic System.

How is this training delivered?

  • Theory is delivered in the classroom but the course incorporates a significant element of practical hands on training building a trench support system and access (in a controlled simulation).

What do I need to bring with me?

  • Delegates should bring with them hearing protection, safety boots, safety glasses, hard hat, working gloves and overalls/high visibility vests. A significant proportion of the course is delivered outdoors and waterproof (possibly warm) clothing is advisable.
  • Delegates can bring with them any materials used in their work, copies of risk assessments or management systems so that they can see how their materials fit in to the context of the training.
