Legionella: Healthcare Premises Hot and Cold Water Systems training course

A 3 day training course for persons who are involved in the management and maintenance of hot and cold water services in healthcare buildings and infrastructure (pipe work, taps, toilets or cisterns). This course is specifically tailored to the requirements of the healthcare sector and using the framework 'Water Systems Health Technical Memorandum HTM04-01 the control of legionella, "safe" hot water, cold water and drinking water systems'.

What you will learn

  • You will revisit the risks associated with Legionella bacteria, Legionnaires' Disease, relevant legislation, the L8 Fourth edition code of practice and HSG274 Technical Guidance and healthcare sector guidance HTM04-01.
  • Medical aspects of Legionellosis, its occurrence, ecology and transmission routes, including reported cases past and present.
  • Design of water systems and modifications to minimise proliferation of Legionella and other organisms by reference to the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations, guidance documents and approved fittings and materials.
  • Identification of susceptible areas within water systems including storage cisterns, calorifiers, terminal fittings and associated distributing pipe work.
  • Treatment control programmes.
  • Testing water for temperature, pH, chlorine residual and microbial colonisation using dip slides, and TVC analysis.
  • Recommendations for the cleaning and disinfection of systems using chlorine based chemicals.
  • Reporting and recording procedures, including operation and maintenance logs and control measures to minimise risks.

What qualifications will you achieve?

  • This course incorporates assessment and certification under the City and Guilds Frontline Skills Framework Utilities 5831 scheme unit 403 Legionella Hot and Cold Water Systems.

How is this training delivered?

  • The course is delivered in the classroom. Where possible we will use local water systems to put the course materials in to context.
  • The City and Guilds qualification is assessed through written tests.

What do I need to bring with me?

  • Delegates can bring with them any materials used by their own employer, copies of risk assessments or management systems so that they can see how their materials fit in to the context of the training.
