Course overview

A 2 day training course designed for operatives who need to renew their SWQR (Streetworks Qualifications Register) registration for Units 1-6 and 9 in line with the 2nd Edition Specification for Reinstatement of Openings in the Highway and the New Roads and Streetworks Act 1991, revised 2002 Code of Practice. Learners can complete this course with Develop Training up to four months after their expiry date, after this point there is insufficient time to complete a refresher registration within SQWR timescales and a full course is required.

What you will learn

  • You will revisit the skills and knowledge to carry out work to the standards required by the Specification for the Reinstatement of Openings in Highways (Second Edition 2002).
  • You will revisit the risks associated with striking underground apparatus, to recognise the signs of underground services and interpret utility plans.
  • You will look again at signing, lighting and guarding the workplace and the erection of temporary traffic signals.
  • The methods of excavation, safety measures and the use of road drills and saws, and how to support utility apparatus within the excavation.
  • The storage of excavated materials for re-use. Placing and compaction of backfill and sub-base materials. Laying and compaction of cold-lay bituminous materials.

What qualifications will you achieve?

  • This course incorporates assessment and certification under the City & Guilds scheme 6156 (Units 1-6 and 9).
  • The re-assessment training course also supports registration with SWQR (Streetworks Qualifications Register).

How is this training delivered?

  • Theory surrounding the course is delivered in the classroom but there is an emphasis on practicing skills in and around the highway in a low risk, supervised and controlled situation.
  • Excavations/reinstatement is undertaken in purposes built training facilities.
  • The City & Guilds qualification is assessed through written tests and observation of practical exercises.

What do I need to bring with me?

  • Learners must bring their existing SWQR card showing units 1-6 and 9.
  • Learners can bring with them any materials used by their own employer, copies of risk assessments or management systems so that they can see how their materials fit in to the context of the training.
