A 2 day training course designed for supervisors who need to renew their SWQR (Streetworks Qualifications Register) registration for Units 1, 10-14 and 16 in line with the 2nd Edition Specification for Reinstatement of Openings in the Highway and the New Roads and Streetworks Act 1991, revised 2002 Code of Practice.

What you will learn

  • You will revisit the skills and knowledge necessary to supervise work to the standards required by the Specification for the Reinstatement of Openings in Highways (Second Edition 2002).
  • You will revisit the risks associated with striking underground apparatus, to recognise the signs of underground services, interpret utility plans and to use tools, including CAT and Genny, to locate underground structures.
  • You will look again at signing, lighting and guarding the workplace and the erection of temporary traffic signals.
  • The methods of excavation, safety measures and the use of road drills and saws, and how to support utility apparatus within the excavation.
  • The selection and storage of excavated materials for re-use.
  • Placing and compaction of backfill and sub-base materials.
  • Laying and compaction of cold-lay bituminous materials.

What qualifications will you achieve?

  • This reinstatement of the highway re-assessment course incorporates assessment and certification under the City and Guilds scheme 6156 (Units 1, 10-14 and 16).
  • The course also supports registration with SWQR.

How is this training delivered?

  • Theory surrounding the course is delivered in the classroom but there is an emphasis on practicing skills in and around the highway in a low risk, supervised and controlled situation. Delegates tell us they value the opportunity to practice skills in a real live situation.
  • Excavations/reinstatement is undertaken in purposes built training facilities.
  • The City and Guilds qualification is assessed through written tests and observation of practical exercises.

What do I need to bring with me?

  • Delegates should bring safety boots, hard hat, eye protection, ear protection, working gloves, waterproof clothing and high visibility clothing to use in the practical exercises.
  • Delegates can bring with them any materials used by their own employer, copies of risk assessments, or management systems, so that they can see how their materials fit in to the context of the training.
