DTL duo help Swindon students get set for the world of work
30 July 2018
A pair of gas and energy industry experts from Develop Training Ltd (DTL) have been helping Year 10 students from a Swindon school to prepare for the world of work.
Gavin Davies, Delivery Manager for Energy, and Lee Morgan, a Senior Lecturer in Gas and Smart Metering, joined a number of other employers putting students through their paces in a round of mock job interviews at Abbey Park School.
Both Gavin and Lee have had varied careers spanning the military and a number of ‘Big 6’ energy providers so bring with them a huge amount of experience around what it takes to get onto the career ladder and progress through the gas and energy industry.
Giving back to the local community
Lee Morgan explains; “DTL are always keen to give back to the local community, so when we heard about this event we thought it was a fantastic opportunity to get involved in. The students seemed to really value the experience and we enjoyed telling them all about the exciting, and ever-changing, industry that we work in; hopefully we’ll see a few of them joining the industry in the future!”
Helping students refine their skills
Prior to the interviews, students completed application forms for a selection of jobs, and were then quizzed by the DTL duo and other loyal employers using standard interview questions and techniques. The volunteers then provided feedback about how the students could improve their applications and interview performances before they go through the process for real.
A valuable student exerience
John White, Lead Practitioner for CEIAG and Mathematics at Abbey Park School, said: “The amount of support we received from local employers for this event was overwhelming and it was fantastic that DTL were able to join us. The purpose of the event was to give our students a flavor of a real-life interview and allow them to gain confidence and address any areas of improvement before heading out into the world of work for real. Overall the day was a great success and I’d like to express our sincere thanks to all those who took the time out of their working day to support us and our students.”
