New-look smart meter training team ready for roll out

25 September 2017

Develop Training Ltd (DTL) is pleased to introduce its new-look Smart Meter training delivery team, comprising highly-qualified lecturers with hands-on experience of smart meter installation.

The team is led by Gavin Davies, DTL’s Delivery Manager for Energy.  Gavin is based out of DTL’s Derby training centre but divides his time between several centres and boasts 10 years in the domestic gas industry prior to moving into education.  Away from the office, Gavin is a motorcycle and classic car enthusiast and a keen woodworker – his most recent project was the design and construction of a 12x10ft Dutch barn roofed garden shed.

Smart meter apprenticeship

Gavin is supported by Nicola Smith, Lee Morgan and David Hudson.  Nicola is relatively new to training, having joined DTL in February 2017, and prior to that she spent several years as a smart meter engineer for British Gas after completing a smart meter apprenticeship with the same company in 2013.  Working with smart meters was a completely new vocation for Nicola – previously she was working in Canary Wharf as a qualified mortgage and financial advisor and stockbroker, as well as running her own wedding and celebration cake business!  Nicola is predominantly based at DTL’s Derby training centre.

Commercial and domestic experience

A former military instructor on engineering, health and safety, fire safety and security, Lee Morgan brings almost ten years’ experience of working with gas (both commercial and domestic), and twice as many years working with electricity (telecommunications), to DTL’s Swindon training centre.  Lee has been working in smart metering since 2011 and has previous worked for British Gas, SSE, nPower and the MOD.  A qualified rugby coach and former boxer, Lee sometimes works as a consultant in his spare time, drawing on his experiences as a coach to provide useful insight to rugby clubs ranging from children’s teams through to professional outfits.

Completing the DTL smart metering team is David Hudson who, prior to joining DTL, spent two years delivering smart metering apprenticeships for British Gas, having previously worked for two years as a smart meter installer.  David is based at DTL’s Derby training centre and away from the office he is a keen sportsman playing rugby to a regional level, having previously done the same for football and hockey.

Smart meter rollout

As DTL has reported in our in-depth smart metering whitepaper, the UK government’s energy policy requires suppliers to install smart meters in the homes of all domestic customers and small businesses by the end of 2020.  But with less than four years until that deadline, over 48 million meters remain uninstalled.  In order to meet rising installation rates, more dual fuel smart meter installers are needed than exist currently.  DTL’s new-look smart meter training delivery team is standing by to assist.
