The Importance of Mindfulness in the Workplace - Mental Health Awareness Week

During National Mental Health Awareness Week 2016 (16-20 May 2016), DTL is reminding employers that mindfulness in the workplace is an essential skill that managers and employees gain great value from.
Clive Lawrence-Forbes, Head of Management Development for DTL, said: “In leading organisations such as Google, Apple, the Department of Health and Transport for London, mindfulness training is being offered to staff. These businesses recognise the constant stream of information, when your mind is already full, can mean there is little space for being present.
This can lead to an increased likelihood of illness, health and safety incidents, communication failures, a drop in productivity and relationship breakdowns resulting in conflicts.”
45 minutes a day
It only takes 45 minutes of mindfulness a day over eight weeks to make a difference to health and wellbeing. More importantly, spending a few minutes practicing mindfulness could save lives - some of the worst world disasters caused by humans were the result of not being present enough to make an effective decision.
High profile incidents further emphasise the need for effective training. For example, investigations into the famous Chernobyl disaster concluded that human error had a hand in the failure, due to an employee disabling automatic shutdown mechanisms.
In 2010, five key human errors and a colossal mechanical failure lead to the unprecedented BP disaster. The explosion on the Deepwater Horizon oil rig and subsequent spill cost the company more than $40bn in liabilities, including the cleanup, victim compensation and fines.
