Training can prevent accidents and avoid significant costs
17 November 2017
The value of appropriate training was highlighted recently by the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) after a contractor in Essex received significant burns when he struck underground electrical cables.
The HSE said that, "the contractor's injuries were very serious, and he could have easily been killed. This injury would have been prevented if the company had planned and implemented safe methods of working, and provided the necessary information and training to its workers."
According to the HSE the contractor's employer failed to adequately plan, manage and monitor the construction work and, in particular, did not establish the position of underground cables. The company received a bill for fines and costs of nearly £30,000.
Good quality training would have avoided both this unnecessary cost and maintained a worker's health.
