DTL's 8-Second Lesson series

DTL's 8-Second Lesson series

Recognising that the eldest individuals in Generation Z are now entering the workplace, and observing that - apparently - their attention span is just EIGHT seconds, DTL looked at what key learning could be conveyed in such a short time. Thus, DTL's 8-Second Lesson video series was born!

Frequently asked questions for Confined Spaces training

Read our FAQ for Confined Spaces training, including information on practical exercises and use of Breathing Apparatus.

What is a confined space?

Any enclosed space where a person is at risk of harm from hazards such as:

  • Drowning.
  • Entrapment.
  • Toxic gases / asphyxiation.
  • Fire or explosion.

For information, definitions and legislation refer to the HSE confined space website.

How do I order confined spaces training from Develop?

This is simple, you can either make your booking or enquiry online, or call us on 0800 876 6708, where our training advisors will advice you on the training solutions we offer.

What is different about Develop Training confined space courses?

Our courses have an emphasis on "hands on" practical experience in realistic training environments and we think you have more opportunity to get familiar with the equipment. Many delegates tell us they have been elsewhere and not had the same opportunities for practical experience. We focus on making sure our training reflects the return on investment that you and your employer want. We think we do this better than other training providers and it is the reason why we hold the "Training Excellence" award. Delegates praise for our trainer's knowledge, presentation skills and the support they give is very high. We can provide statistics on delegate perception from previous courses.

Can I visit your training centres to look around before I book my training course?

Yes, you may visit our centre at any time, just phone and we will book you an appointment.

In what areas of the UK can you provide confined spaces training?

Develop Training has five purpose built training facilities across the UK offering realistic confined space training in controlled conditions. Scotland, York, Swindon, Bolton and Derby.

Can I undertake training at my premises?

Delivery of confined spaces courses can be undertaken on the employer's premises where delegate numbers make this practicable and where there is a suitable enclosed space in which to hold practical exercises. We will need to risk assess the facilities beforehand.

Can you customise confined space courses to suit our particular requirements?

Yes - to discuss if this is possible please speak to our friendly training advisor team on 0800 876 6708.

If I have a group of people needing confined spaces training, can I get a discount?

Yes if you speak to one of our training advisors they may be able to create a bespoke event which will work out cheaper for you organisation.

Does your confined space training include the use of breathing apparatus?

Yes. There are courses that incorporate Escape Set Breathing Apparatus and Full Working Set Breathing Apparatus. All breathing apparatus equipment is provided. Delegates new to breathing apparatus have the opportunity to get to know the equipment in safe and controlled conditions.

Do I need to bring a medical certificate?

Delegates working on MOD estates will need to provide evidence that they meet the level of medical fitness required by the MOD safety rules covering confined spaces.

In all other courses our Trainers must be confident that the delegate is suited to a practical exercise. We do not insist on a medical certificate being produced beforehand but if you have a breathing difficulty or limited mobility it is prudent to talk to your doctor before you attend. In all courses it is the trainer who has the final judgment as they must supervise the exercise (please call us on 0800 876 6708 if you would like further guidance about the exercises or the use of breathing apparatus).

Do I need to be clean shaven for a Breathing Apparatus exercise?

To get a good seal around the face it is recommended that delegates who use Full Working Set Breathing Apparatus or similar masks are clean shaven. We do not insist of being clean shaven on our training courses as you will be training with no real risk, but your employer, and supervisors of confined space entry, may insist on you being clean shaven.

Do I need to bring my own PPE (personal protective equipment)?

Yes, bring with you any PPE that you are issued by your employer. For the practical exercises you will need safety boots, hard hat, safety glasses, working gloves and high visibility clothing or vest. Please also bring waterproof clothing as in some instances entry may be made outdoors.

Do I need to bring a harness and lanyard?

We have a selection of harnesses but If you have your own harness and lanyard please bring these with you and we will incorporate them in to the training if possible.

How are the practical exercises undertaken?

Where we can we make practical exercises as realistic as possible, but we use enclosed spaces without the type of hazards that would by definition make the space a "confined space".

Do I need to bring documentation used in my company?

This not essential, but please feel free to bring any documentation you use as it can help put the exercises in to context for your own organisation and procedures.

I have paid for a confined spaces course, what happens now?

We will send you a range of documents which will contain: your receipt of payment and invoice, the confined spaces training course notes, a map to the location you have chosen, joining instructions and your delegate booking form. In case you have any questions, we are available on 0800 876 6708 to answer any enquiries or concerns that you may have.

How long does it take for my certificate to come through?

This usually takes 4-6 weeks.
