NRSWA Excavation in the Highway (NRSWA LA+O1O2/S1S2)
Course overview
Course for operatives who work and excavate in the highways, therefore, needing to locate underground apparatus, and apply signing, lighting and guarding in order to protect road users, pedestrians and the workforce. Learners will also learn about methods of excavation, and the tools used during excavation activities. The course can also be undertaken by those supervising such work.

What you’ll learn on this course
- Risks and control measures to apply, in order to prevent striking underground services.
- How to use cable detection equipment accurately, and to be able to follow, drawings, plans and maps.
- How to set out signing, lighting and guarding in the correct sequence according to the speed and type of highway; understand and use traffic control measures, and take down all signing, lighting and guarding equipment in the correct sequence, once the work is finished.
- Gain theoretical and practical experience around excavation in the highway.
What do I need to bring with Me?
- Learners should bring their own safety footwear, eye protection, hearing protection, waterproof clothing, high visibility vest/clothing, hard hat and working gloves for the practical exercises.
How is the training delivered?
- The theoretical aspects of the course are delivered in the classroom, and there is an emphasis on gaining practical 'hands on'’ experience of all equipment necessary to complete the work safely and accurately; this is undertaken in our purpose built facilities under continual supervision.
- Assessment focuses on learners carrying out practical activities, against a set criteria, and the completion of multi choice question papers.
Qualifications available
- Upon successful completion of written and practical assessments, learners will receive a CABWI certificate, detailing the units undertaken, and a Streetworks Card registered with SWQR will also be issued to each competent person or supervisor, endorsing the qualification, and this will remain valid for five years.
