Incidents involving unsafe gas works make the headlines

   16 August 2023         News

Incidents involving poor or unsafe gas work continue to be a recurring problem across the UK, and one that should be a concern for all personal and commercial property owners.

The latest incident involves a self-employed plumber who carried out unsafe gas work in Hampshire and pretended to be Gas Safe registered.

Ben Craig Siddle, trading as BCS Gas and Plumbing, worked on numerous homes in Hampshire in 2021 and 2022 even though he was not a Gas Safe registered engineer.

Mr Siddle, 24, falsely represented himself as a Gas Safe registered engineer to customers and did not carry out the work to appropriate standards, leaving residents at risk from unsafe gas appliances.

He left two of the properties he worked on in an unsafe condition.

Gas Safe registered engineers were later required to correct and repair installations Mr Siddle had carried out at these properties. At one property on East Cosham Road, Portsmouth, the boiler and flue Mr Siddle installed were deemed immediately dangerous. A boiler Mr Siddle installed at another property on Howard Road, Portsmouth, was classed as at risk. Gas Safe training is paramount

Poor workmanship could result in a life-threatening situation where appliances have actually been made dangerous by the illegal fitter, causing risk of explosion and/or of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning.

This alarming news serves as a stark reminder to businesses and home-owners that it is vital to ensure you are checking the gas safe register before hiring a contractor.

Develop Training’s ACS gas training courses are NICEIC accredited, allowing the individual and/or employer to apply for Gas Safe Registration following successful completion of the training.

It is vital that anyone involved in gas works has up to date knowledge of the latest legislation and working practices, and is Gas Safe Registered.

Safe & Skilled: High-Pressure Water Jetting Training in the Spotlight

   11 August 2023         News

Last week, our York centre welcomed a group of delegates eager to dive into the world of high-pressure water jetting. Training Terrace served as the ideal setting for this immersive training experience; with a focus on practical learning, the facility provides the perfect environment for delegates to safely familiarise themselves with high-pressure water jetting equipment and techniques.

Under the guidance of our experienced water jetting trainer, Danny Connor, the delegates began their two-day Water Jetting Safety Awareness and Drain & Sewer Cleaning training course by covering the theoretical side of safety awareness. Day 2 is where the fun really began as the group headed outside to conduct a thorough inspection of the high-pressure water jetting equipment. Together, they meticulously examined every component, from nozzles to pumps. This collaborative and methodical exercise helps to instill the importance of attention to detail and the precise approach required in high-pressure water jetting.

Following this, Danny showcased the use of the jetting units controls. He then demonstrated the use of the hose and nozzles in the transparent tube attached to the water jetter trailer, allowing the delegates to visually observe the efficiency and effect of the nozzles in action, whilst instructing them on proper hose manipulation and technique. Delegates then paired up, taking turns to operate the high-pressure water jetting equipment.

Danny’s guidance ensured that each pair showcased their ability to handle the hose and control the jetter accurately. This practical session not only honed technical skills but also emphasised teamwork and effective communication.

Safe working practices in high-pressure water jetting

Armed with newfound knowledge and skills, the delegates left Training Terrace with a heightened awareness of safe working practices in high-pressure water jetting. The comprehensive training experience also prepared them to recognise potential risks, make informed decisions, and handle the equipment responsibly.

As they return to their roles, they carry with them the confidence and competence needed to tackle high-pressure water jetting tasks while prioritising safety. Their employer can also rest assured that their employees have received training that is certificated by the Water Jetting Association (WJA), and run in accordance with their Code of Practice and fully accredited by City & Guilds.

Moreover, Training Terrace provided a risk-free learning space, allowing the group to learn from any mistakes made during training without adverse consequences.

The dangers of high pressure water jetting

High pressure water jetting can be extremely dangerous. It is therefore essential that all those expected to use this type of equipment receive appropriate and adequate training in accordance with the Water Jetting Association’s (WJA) Code of Practice.

The courses offered by Develop Training are Certificated by the WJA, run in accordance with their Code of Practice and fully accredited by City & Guilds.

Some of the risks associated with high pressure water jetting include:

  • the high pressure water jet may pierce the skin or cause injury
  • loud noise exposure
  • slip, trip and fall hazards
  • electric shock
  • contaminated material may be injected into the body
  • flying debris may cause injury
  • out of control equipment such as a flailing hose, an out of control nozzle, or a separated hose coupling may cause injury

High pressure water jetting training

High pressure water jetting is increasingly used in construction and maintenance for a range of tasks, including surface cleaning, drain and sewer cleaning, material cutting and hydro-demolition. All councils, insurance companies, water utilities and major contractors demand that staff have the correct training and hold valid certificates. However, more importantly it is essential that staff have a strong awareness and appreciation of safe working practices in order to maintain their own personal health and safety and that of those around them.

Develop Training offer the following water jetting and sewer maintenance training courses:

Water Jetting Safety Awareness and Drain & Sewer Cleaning

Water Jetting Safety Awareness – Refresher

Pipe Sewer Condition Conversion to MSCC5

Water Jetting Pressure Washer

Utility SHEA – Drains and Sewers

New Beginnings: Lysia Grainger Takes on the Role of Derby Centre Coordinator

   3 August 2023        News

Introducing Lysia Grainger, the latest addition to Marisa Harris’ Training Administration team, taking on the pivotal role of Derby Centre Coordinator. With an impressive background in sales and operations roles, Lysia’s career began in sales at a beauty company, alongside which she simultaneously pursued her college studies.

Her professional journey then led her to a role in patient services, whereby after 5 years she was appointed as Operations Manager at just 22 years old. It was in this role that Lysia encountered one of the most significant challenges in her career, when during a critical systems transition a large proportion of patient’s data was lost. It was during this stressful time that she learnt a wide range of skills in how to address and resolve complex issues, whilst remaining calm under pressure.

As she embarks on her role in Derby’s newly refurbished training centre, Lysia is already embracing her responsibilities with enthusiasm and professionalism as she welcomes delegates and helps to maintain the smooth running of the centre.

Reflecting on her first few weeks in the role, Lysia said, “Everyone has been incredibly welcoming and friendly. They’ve taken the time to show me the different systems and support me, and of course the canteen is a tasty bonus!”

Away from work

Lysia has recently returned from 2 months travelling – she travelled around Australia as well as visiting places including Bali, Rome, Lake Como, and Barcelona. She also enjoys hiking with her dog, listening to podcasts and investing.

Develop extends a warm welcome to Lysia and we look forward to witnessing her flourish in this new role.

Scaling Success: National Grid Highlights the Power of Leadership Training

   31 July 2023         News

The National Grid Electricity Distribution’s (NGED) Building High Performing Teams (BHPT) project is an ambitious initiative that Develop’s Leadership & Management team have developed and are delivering across the entirety of NGED. Spanning from 2022 to 2024, this comprehensive leadership development programme consists of 32 cohorts, each comprising up to 10 delegates.

The training initiative was driven by feedback from a staff survey called Grid:voice from which it was clear that NGED needed to equip their managers with the necessary skills to be leaders of the future. The overall aim of the BHPT project is to equip operational team leaders with the necessary skills and knowledge to form cohesive and highly effective teams, enabling them to excel in their respective roles within the organisation.

Leaders of the future

Furthermore, every cohort within the NGED BHPT program is assigned a senior advocate who provides guidance and support throughout the team leader’s leadership journey. This ensures that delegates receive personalised attention and mentoring to maximize their learning experience and further strengthen their team dynamics.

“I found the training very thought provoking and it has already offered useful advice/guidance on ways I can help improve my team. I was unaware of most of this before the sessions!” explained one thrilled delegate.

Leadership and management training that makes a difference

On the first day of the programme the focus is on fostering high-performing team relationships and identifying the team’s problem solving strengths. Each cohort engages in a range of interactive exercises, one of which involves constructing a tower using only the provided resources within a tight timeframe of 15 minutes. The results have been nothing short of astounding, with one cohort emerging as the frontrunners, reaching a staggering height of 351cm. Their tower nearly grazed the apex of the NGED training room; a testament to their exceptional teamwork and ingenuity.

As the NGED BHPT programme progresses, it is clear that the latest cohort has set a remarkable benchmark for the heights of success that can be achieved through collaborative efforts. Their outstanding tower-building performance serves as an inspiration for future cohorts and emphasizes the programme’s commitment to fostering excellence in teamwork.

Stay tuned for more updates on the NGED BHPT programme as it continues to inspire team leaders to develop high performing teams.

Expert guidance in a challenging environment: confined space training

   27 July 2023         News

Led by seasoned trainer, Joe Cheatle, earlier this week a group of delegates embarked on a Level 2 Award in Working in Medium Risk Confined Spaces training course at our newly refurbished York centre.

As part of the practical element of the course, each individual was lowered into the confined space unit by the ‘top man’. They then went on to navigate their way through a series of tunnels and shafts until a mock emergency gas leak scenario was simulated, during which they had to work together as a team to effectively manage the situation and safely remove themselves from the facility.

Under Joe’s expert guidance, all of the delegates remained calm under pressure and implemented appropriate safety measures during this particular exercise. Other elements covered during the course included safe entry, emergency procedures and escapes using breathing apparatus.

CABWI-accredited confined spaces qualification

Upon successful completion of this CABWI accredited Level 2 qualification, delegates can expect to go on to achieve qualifications for high risk confined spaces, and/or supervision or management of confined space entry.

What is classed as a confined space?

Any room or enclosed area can be classified as a confined space. You could already be working in or managing a number of roles, for example:

• Underground engineer
• Water distribution/Sewerage process operator
• Water jetter
• Water/Wastewater treatment plant operator
• Boiler/plant room maintenance

Confined spaces pose unique challenges in a wide variety of industries, demanding specialised skills and the utmost precaution. Working in a confined space is dangerous because of the risks from noxious fumes, reduced oxygen levels, risk of fire or even dangers such as drowning and asphyxiation from dust.

A risk-free confined space learning environment

At all our training centres, safety remains our top priority, and our new training facilities at York adhere to the highest industry standards. That’s why, as part of our brand new, fully to-scale artificial street, Training Terrace, we’ve created a confined spaces environment that enables delegates to confront challenges head-on, whilst in a risk-free learning environment.

How Develop built an ‘artificial street’ to revolutionise facilities management training

   24 June 2023         Blogs

Training is only as good as its ability to be applied. As a training provider responsible for training the staff behind some of this country’s most vital infrastructure, from the gas networks that fuel our homes, to the roads we travel on, Develop continues to lead the way in providing innovative and high quality standards of training.

And recently, following an investment of over £500,000 on Training Terrace, and a further £500,000 on the main centre refurbishment, Develop has constructed a training facility that presents obstacles and challenges like those found on real-life commercial and domestic sites. Running alongside its newly upgraded York training centre, Develop’s training delivery in the northern region of this country has never looked better, and its place as a training innovator has never been so certain.

Fully to-scale artificial street for utilities training

The fully to-scale artificial street, known as Training Terrace, consists of three purpose-built houses, apartments, a café, a deep excavation pit and a confined spaces area. As quaint as a life would be on Training Terrace, behind each of these operations are meticulously designed facilities built to train delegates in emergency response to gas incidents, excavation safety, cable avoidance, sewer jetting and confined spaces entry.

Training Terrace first began as a project only known as the JETSET street (Joint Emergency Training Set), which became a reality through funding from Develop and its parent company, JTL.

The site chosen as the home for this project was Develop’s York training centre, which has long functioned as a foundational training facility for the varying requirements of industry in North Yorkshire. In particular, Develop has had a longstanding relationship with the region thanks to its strong relationship with Northern Gas Networks.

Public competition to name the street

Along with the first announcement of the project in January, Develop launched an exciting public competition to officially name the street, which received over 150 entries. In order to decide which name would be immortalised in the street’s signage, a judging panel made up of senior members of staff from across the JTL Group shortlisted 10 names before finally noting a consensus favourite – Training Terrace, suggested by Shaun Gavin and Lindsay Talks.

The grand unveiling

The grand opening of Training Terrace took place on 24th May alongside the reopening of Develop’s York centre, which was itself updated to include new classrooms, an alternative energies training area, two HV (High Voltage) workshops and a LV (Low Voltage) workshop.

John Kerr, Managing Director at Develop, said: ‘This new state of the art facility will give us a fantastic base to deliver essential and enhanced training to businesses in North Yorkshire and beyond. We’re thrilled to unveil a centre that will work in tandem with Training Terrace, as this new street provides an innovative facility that we’re proud to operate from.”

The new provisions at this Huby-based centre means that Develop can now provide higher quality training in confined spaces, HV & LV, gas distribution, health and safety, healthcare estates, water systems and alternative energies offering businesses in the region a state of the art facility to train their workforce.

The overall improvement to the York centre – and the inclusion of Training Terrace – was something that the team at gas network operator, Northern Gas Networks (NGN), were thrilled to work in partnership with Develop on.

A significant improvement to training facilities

Paul Tate, Lead Emergency Trainer at Northern Gas Networks, said: “The facilities including the new JETSET will significantly improve the training opportunities for the whole team at Northern Gas Networks and provide real-life scenarios. It’s been a long-term project and it’s fantastic to see it come to life and now be used to enhance the training and development opportunities for not just Northern Gas but the sector as a whole.”

Delivered in partnership with Northern Gas Networks

Develop has a longstanding relationship with NGN having worked with the Gas Distribution Network for a number of years across a variety of projects. Through this partnership Develop and NGN have worked to identify the training needs and wants for those currently working in the industry as well as looking ahead to the requirements of the future generation.

The reopening event was attended by Chris Adair, Training and Apprenticeships Manager at Northern Gas Networks, alongside other key industry figures from the North Yorkshire region.

New training facilities for the North Yorkshire region

The new facilities have also proved successful with North Yorkshire Council Divisional Councillor for Huby, Malcolm Taylor, who welcomed the positive effects that it will have on the local economy. He said: “It’s fantastic to see this investment in the Huby area, and I believe this centre will be invaluable for training businesses and delegates in the region.

“The unique facilities that Training Terrace is able to offer will be an exciting, unique addition to the landscape of industry available here, and I look forward to seeing the new wave of professionals being produced in our area.”

The opening ceremony itself saw a day of networking, tours and panel discussions, as well as a ribbon cutting ceremony, which was marked by John Kerr and JTL Training’s CEO, Chris Claydon.

Positive feedback from first intake of delegates

In June, Training Terrace welcomed its first intake of delegates who were undertaking NCO Gas Level 2 Escape, Locate & Repair training. Feedback from those involved was extremely positive with one delegate commenting that the site was “well thought-out with realistic interiors” and another stating that “Training Terrace makes the scenarios more realistic and familiar.”

And that’s just what Develop aims to do – offer cutting-edge training to delegates at the highest standard. Whether that be at Training Terrace, in the classroom, virtually or via Develop’s brand new e-learning platform, LEDA, which offers a suite of accredited e-learning courses specifically designed to supplement its practical training offering.

Yorkshire Ambulance Service take their training to the next level

   21 July 2023         News

Just a few weeks ago, our York centres’ esteemed neighbors, the Yorkshire NHS Ambulance Service, took their training to the next level by carrying out their training on our fully to-scale artificial street, Training Terrace.

As emergency responders responsible for saving lives during critical incidents, such as terrorist attacks, the team were practicing and being assessed on their response to a multi-casualty scene. Training Terrace provided them with an immersive environment that closely replicates real-life scenarios. This lifelike setting allowed the ambulance service personnel to face the challenges they might encounter in their line of duty head-on, ensuring they could immerse themselves in a realistic environment and make the assessment seem as authentic as possible.

Moreover, the street provided a risk-free learning space, allowing the team to learn from any mistakes made during training without adverse consequences.

Leading the way in realistic training environments

Training Terrace is an immersive, fully to-scale artificial street designed to replicate real-life scenarios. As a training provider in the utilities industry, Develop understand the importance of practical training, and Training Terrace delivers precisely that. By simulating multi-casualty scenes,  the true to-life environment enabled the Yorkshire Ambulance Service to undergo a rigorous assessment of their response capabilities.

Develop is committed to supporting the emergency services, and providing access to the street free of charge was a small gesture of our appreciation for their critical work. It was an honour to play a part in empowering such a vital service that safeguards our communities.
